Google PageRank is one of the most talked about algorithms in search optimization history.
At inception, Google was based almost entirely on PageRank. In the Google Thesis, they discuss how they had developed Google to be simple text-matching, then sorted by PageRank.
The PageRank formula is based on references. Links in to a site are considered votes for a page, and thus, increase the value of that page in the search ranking.
The formula uses a model of a ?random surfer? who gets bored after several clicks and switches to a random page.
The exact formula, as defined in Google?s thesis is:
PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + ? + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))
Where, PR(Tn) is the result of the algorithm on page n, C(Tn) is the count of outbound links. So, PR(Tn)/C(Tn) means that the new page will get the links pagerank divided by the number of links out. In other words, your Pagerank is split between every link on the page. The ?d? value, is a dampening factor, rumor says, and the inital thesis says, that it is set to 0.85. |
